Same Soul, Different Name And Why Brooklyn Still Does Them Best.
Ask a room full of well-dressed men what they call
the straps that hold their trousers up, and you’ll
spark a surprisingly passionate debate.
Some swear by braces.
Others will fight for suspenders. A few old-school purists might even throw in
galluses.
So… which is it?
Recently, we asked our community this very
question. The responses were split, spirited, and
exactly what we expected:
“Braces!”
“Suspenders.”
“Different things entirely.”
“Exhausting debate… I’ll accept suspenders for now.”
The responses spanned cities, continents, and generations — proof that the debate is as global as it is timeless. And honestly? We loved every take, because at KK & Jay Supply Co., we believe this debate isn’t about right vs. wrong — it’s about heritage, geography, and personal style.
A Very Short History of Holding Up Your Trousers
The concept itself dates back to the 18th century. Originally worn as undergarments, early
versions of what we now call suspenders or braces were hidden beneath waistcoats. By the late 1800s, they became an essential part of men’s tailoring.
- In Britain, they were — and still are — called braces.
- In America, proud home of KK & Jay, the term suspenders took over to avoid confusion with dental braces.
- In some parts of the world., especially among old-school dressers, you’ll still hear galluses— a throwback term with deep workwear roots.
- Different names. Same job. Same purpose. Same quiet elegance.
